Ayurved

Ayurved ("the science of life"), the traditional medicine of India, is not a science artificially imposed upon living beings. Ayurveda is made up of two Sanskrit words: “Ayu” which means life and “Veda” which means the knowledge. To know about life is Ayurveda. Ayurved is based upon a profound understanding of the spirit of life and the movement of its force. Ayurved has a holistic approach to individuals wherein it does not differentiate between the body and the mind as they are interrelated and integrated .So what happens to one influences the other.
It is a science based upon the observation of living being and their actual reaction to their environment. Many scholars believe that knowledge of Ayurveda spread out from India and influenced the ancient Chinese system of medicine, Unani medicine, and the medicine practiced by Hippocrates in Greece. It also emphasizes on preventive health care.
Many Ayurvedic practices were handed down by word of mouth and were used before there were written records. Two ancient books, written in Sanskrit on palm leaves more than 2,000 years ago, are thought to be the first texts on Ayurveda--Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita.
Ayurveda views a person as a unique individual made up of five primary elements. The elements are ether (space), air, fire, water, and earth. Each element is represented in the human body. When any of these elements are present in the environment, they will in turn have an influence on us.
These elements combine to form 3 doshas.
Vata Dosha: Ether and Air come together to form Vata.
Vata governs movement and is responsible for directing such functions as the heart beat, respiration, circulation, movement of food in digestion and the nerve impulses. Too much Vata can lead to symptoms such as high blood pressure, while too little can result in constipation. Emotionally it is responsible for such positive emotions as creativity and flexibility and its' negative aspects are fear and anxiety.
Pitta Dosha: Fire, plus  water come together as Pitta
Pitta governs transformation, perception and metabolism and it is responsible for such functions as transformation of foods into nutrients, digestion and temperature. Too much Pitta can lead to symptoms such as ulcers and acne, while too little can result in indigestion and obesity. Emotionally it is connected with courage, ambition, anger and pride.
Kapha Dosha: Water and Earth make the dosha Kapha
Kapha governs structure and lubrication of the body and is responsible for growth and immunity. Too much Kapha can lead to symptoms such as a runny nose or productive cough, while too little can result in bone problems. It governs emotions such as love and devotion, greed and jealousy.
Everybody is born with a unique combination of these three doshas and this is termed as their prakriti or constitution.
There are 8 branches of Ayurveda.
Kayachikitsa (Internal medicine): This branch deals with treatment of the entire being, mind, body and spirit.
Shalakya Tantra( ENT and Cephalic diseases): This branch deals with the diseases of ear, nose, throat and head and their treatments including special techniques for curing these diseases.
Shalyatantra (Surgery): Maharishi 'Sushruta' is the first surgeon who is also the author of Shalya Chikitsa, the foremost specialty of Ayurveda. The specialty of Shalya covers topics such as anatomy, Physiology, surgical treatment of conditions.
Agadatantra (Poisoning and Toxicology): This branch deals with the toxins from all sources, including air and waterborne toxins.
Kaumarabhritya (Pediatrics): This branch deals with the prenatal and postnatal baby care as well as the care of a woman before and during pregnancy and various diseases of childhood.
Rasayana (Rejuvenation): This branch which is unique to Ayurveda, deals with prevention of diseases and promotion of a long and healthy life. It is concerned with healthy diet and codes of behavioral conduct.
Vajikarana (Aphrodisiacs): This branch deals with the means of increasing sexual vitality and efficiency.
Bhutavidya (Psychology): The study of mental diseases and their treatments. Treatment methods include medicines, diet regulation and yogic methods for treatment of mental diseases.

8 Foods That Combat Fat *exclusive*

8 Foods That Combat Fat

Your allies in battling bulge? Foods that do the work for you. These edibles have proven lipid-melting powers that help you slim. Thats a win.

Almonds
Almond joy! Dieters who ate 3 ounces of these nuts every day reduced their weight and body-mass index by a solid 18 percent compared with an 11 percent drop in the no-nut group, a study in the International Journal of Obesity found. Almonds are high in alpha-linolenic acid, which can speed the metabolism of fats. Stick to 12 per serving.
By Veronica Byrd, Self
Berries
Vitamin C“loaded fruit such as strawberries and raspberries can help you sizzle up to 30 percent more fat during exercise, suggests research from Arizona State University at Mesa. Blend a vinaigrette of 1 cup berries and ¼ cup balsamic vinegar

Cinnamon
This spice could make your waistline nice. Sprinkling ¼ teaspoon on your food may prevent a post-meal insulin spike”this increase normally occurs after you eat and signals the body that it should store fat rather than burn it, explains Lauren Slayton, R.D., of New York City. Add a dash to your oatmeal, yogurt or coffee.
Mustard
Hello, yellow. The spice that gives mustard its color, turmeric, may slow the growth of fat tissues, a study in the journal Endocrinology notes. Eighty-six mayo in favor of any mustard; sprinkle turmeric on cauliflower and roast for a tangy side.
Oranges
Prevent pound creep with this citrus star: It contains fat-torching compounds called flavones. Women who ate the most flavones had a significantly lower increase in body fat over a 14-year period, a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds. Snack on slices or drink freshly squeezed OJ (with pulp!) for the biggest payback.

Soybeans
These green gems are rich in choline, a compound that blocks fat absorption and breaks down fatty deposits. Add ½ cup edamame to a salad.

Sweet Potatoes
Trade up to sweet taters. Theyre high in fiber, which means no drastic insulin jumps and thus less fat packed onto your hips. Bake a small sweet potato”think of two bars of soap as a portion size”and top with a dollop of low-fat or nonfat cottage cheese.

Swiss cheese
Holy cow: Calcium-rich foods reduce fat-producing enzymes and increase fat breakdown, says Michael B. Zemel, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Put toe to toe with some of its cheesy counterparts, Swiss is a heavy hitter in the calcium department; layer a slice on a lunchtime sandwich or stack some on high-fiber crackers.

Anti-Cancer Diet

Garlic

Several large studies have found that those who eat more garlic are less likely to develop various kinds of cancer, especially in digestive organs such as the esophagus, stomach, and colon. Ingredients in the pungent bulbs may keep cancer-causing substances in your body from working, or they may keep cancer cells from multiplying. Experts dont know how much you need to eat to prevent cancer, but a clove a day may be helpful.

 Berries
As a tasty treat, berries are hard to beat. But their juicy goodness also may make them one of the foods to fight cancer. Berries contain particularly powerful antioxidants, meaning they can halt a naturally occurring process in the body that creates free radicals that can damage your cells. Compounds in berries may also help keep cancers from growing or spreading. So, as part of your anti-cancer diet, pick up a handful of blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, or any other favorite berries today.

Tomatoes
Some research has found that eating tomatoes may help protect men from prostate cancer. The juicy red orbs can help guard the DNA in your cells from damage that can lead to cancer. Tomatoes contain a particularly high concentration of an effective antioxidant called lycopene. Your body may absorb lycopene better from processed tomato foods such as sauce, which means that whole-wheat pasta with marinara sauce could be a delicious way to help lower your risk of this disease.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables ” the group containing broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower ” may be particularly helpful in protecting you from cancer. Researchers have found that components in these veggies can protect you from the free radicals that can damage your cells' DNA. They may also shield you from cancer-causing chemicals, help slow the growth of tumors, and encourage cancer cells to die. Theyre a tasty and healthy addition to your anti-cancer diet.

Green Tea

Tea contains antioxidants called catechins, which may help prevent cancer in a variety of ways, including keeping free radicals from damaging cells. Lab studies have found that catechins in tea can shrink tumors and reduce tumor cell growth. Some ” but not all ” studies in humans have also linked drinking tea to a lower risk of cancer. Both green and black teas contain catechins, but youll get more antioxidants from green tea, so you may want to consider a cup or more in your anti-cancer diet.

Whole Grains

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, whole grains contain many components that might lower your risk of cancer, including fiber and antioxidants. A large study including nearly half a million people found that eating more whole grains might lower the risk of colorectal cancer, making them a top item in the category of foods to fight cancer. Oatmeal, barley, brown rice, and whole-wheat bread and pasta are all examples of whole grains.

♥..Signs Of OVARIAN CANCER...♥

Insist on the CA-125 BLOOD TEST  whenever you have your annual physical exam!!
This is an inexpensive and just like a simple blood test!

Remember the name of this test..''CA-125 BLOOD TEST''

SIGNS OF OVARIAN CANCER
(Even In The Absence Of Ovaries)
An Eye-Opener On Ovarian Cancer
THIS IS A MUST TO READ TO THE END

I hope you all take the time to read this and pass it on to all you can. Send this to the women in your life that you care about.

Years ago, Gilda Radner died of ovarian cancer. Her symptoms were inconclusive, and she was treated for everything under the sun until it was too late. This blood test finally identified her illness but alas, too late. She wrote a book to heighten awareness. Gene Wilder is her widower.
Kathy's Story: this is the story of Kathy West
As all of you know, I have Primary Peritoneal Cancer. This cancer has only recently been identified as its OWN type of cancer, but it is essentially Ovarian Cancer.
Both types of cancer are diagnosed in the same way, with the 'tumor marker' CA-125 BLOOD TEST, and they are treated in the same way - surgery to remove the primary tumor and then chemotherapy with Taxol and Carboplatin.
Having gone through this ordeal, I want to save others from the same fate . That is why I am sending this message to you and hope you will print it and give it or send it via E-mail to everybody you know.
One thing I have learned is that each of us must take TOTAL responsibility for our own health care. I thought I had done that because I always had an annual physical and PAP smear, did a monthly Self-Breast Exam, went to the dentist at least twice a year, etc. I even insisted on a sigmoidoscopy and a bone density test last year. When I had a total hysterectomy in 1993, I thought that I did not have to worry about getting any of the female reproductive organ cancers.
LITTLE DID I KNOW. I don't have ovaries (and they were HEALTHY when they were removed), but I have what is essentially ovarian cancer. Strange, isn't it?
These are just SOME of the things our Doctors never tell us: ONE out of every 55 women will get OVARIAN or PRIMARY PERITONEAL CANCER.

I had these classic symptoms and went to the doctor. Because these symptoms seemed to be 'abdominal', I went to a gastroenterologist. He ran tests that were designed to determine whether there was a bacteria infection; these tests were negative, and I was diagnosed with 'Irritable Bowel Syndrome'. I guess I would have accepted this diagnosis had it not been for my enlarged abdomen. I swear to you, it looked like I was 4-5 months pregnant! I therefore insisted on more tests
They took an X-ray of my abdomen; it was negative. I was again assured that I had Irritable Bowel Syndrome and was encouraged to go on my scheduled month-long trip to Europe . I couldn't wear any of my slacks or shorts because I couldn't get them buttoned, and I KNEW something was radically wrong. I INSISTED on more tests, and they reluctantly) scheduled me for a CT-Scan (just to shut me up, I think). This is what I mean by 'taking charge of our own health care.'
The CT-Scan showed a lot of fluid in my abdomen (NOT normal). Needless to say, I had to cancel my trip and have FIVE POUNDS of fluid drawn off at the hospital (not a pleasant experience I assure you), but NOTHING compared to what was ahead of me.
Tests revealed cancer cells in the fluid. Finally, finally, finally, the doctor ran a CA-125 blood test, and I was properly diagnosed.
I HAD THE CLASSIC SYMPTOMS FOR OVARIAN CANCER, AND YET THIS SIMPLE CA-125 BLOOD TEST HAD NEVER BEEN RUN ON ME, not as part of my annual physical exam and not when I was symptomatic. This is an inexpensive and simple blood test!
PLEASE, PLEASE TELL ALL YOUR FEMALE FRIENDS AND RELATIVES TO INSIST ON A CA-125 BLOOD TEST EVERY YEAR AS PART OF THEIR ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAMS.
Be fore warned that their doctors might try to talk them out of it, saying, 'IT ISN'T NECESSARY.' Believe me, had I known then what I know now, we would have caught my cancer much earlier (before it was a stage 3 cancer). Insist on the CA-125 BLOOD TEST; DO NOT take 'NO' for an answer!

'An ounce of prevention is worth
a pound of cure'

This expression means that is is better to try to avoid problems in the first place, rather than trying to fix them once they arise.

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers.

2. Keep only cheerful friends.
The grouches pull you down.

(Keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches!)

3. Keep learning:

Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever.
Never let the brain get idle.
"An idle mind is the devil's workshop."
And the devil's name is Alzheimer's!

4. Enjoy the simple things

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

And if you have a friend who makes you laugh, spend lots and lots of time with him or her!

6. The tears happen:

Endure, grieve, and move on.
The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourself.
LIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love:

Whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever.
Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health:

If it is good, preserve it.
If it is unstable, improve it.
If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips.
Take a trip to the mall, even to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

And if you don't send this to at least four people - who cares?
But do share this with someone.

Top-five Cancer-causing foods

1. Hot Dogs

Visit Us @ www.MumbaiHangOut.Org

Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate.

2. Processed meats and Bacon

Visit Us @ www.MumbaiHangOut.Org

Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.

3. Doughnuts
Visit Us @ www.MumbaiHangOut.Org

Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.

4. French fries

Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams .

5. Chips, crackers, and cookies

All are usually made with white flour and sugar. Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats.

Tight Abs in Two Minutes

Tight Abs in Two Minutes

What's the point of toning your abs if you can't see past the fat?
That's the issue at hand. Far too many of us waste countless hours in the gym or in front of the television working for awesome abs that never come to fruition. No, despite our efforts, we're left with the same belly and sagging skin. All our efforts are in vain and we're left wondering, "WHY?"

Fitness expert and personal trainer has the answer to this pesky problem. If you've never done circuit training, it's time to put the intense workout to the test.

"Creating toned and sculpted abdominal muscles won't do you any good unless you can burn the fat that keeps them hidden away," Stefano tells eDiets. "Combine classic cardio or fat-burning exercise in short spurts at target heart rate levels with compact and effective ab builders to cover all bases."

Over time, your regimen may become dull, weakening your motivation. Fitness Experts note that boredom is the number one killer of a workout program. That's why it's important to kick it up a notch every now and then, which is exactly what the Cardio Abs workout achieves. Combining cardio and strength training into one workout gives exercise enthusiasts the best of both worlds.

"The cardio is actually burning the fat. Doing the crunches and the bike kicks develop the abs and the obliques. While the exercises give you the six-pack abs, they don't burn the fat that hides your stomach. You have to do cardio to burn fat. The great thing about this workout is that you're keeping your heart rate at a fat-burning level throughout the routine."

CARDIO ABS ROUTINE:
  1. Begin with five to 10 minutes of brisk walking, jogging on a treadmill or pedaling on a stationary bike. Two other in-home cardio options might include marching in place or jumping rope.
  2. Stop and immediately get down on your mat for one set of crunches done until muscle fatigue. If possible, adjust intensity (as described below) so as to hit fatigue in the 20-30 repetition range.
  3. Stop and immediately get down on your mat for one set of bike kicks done until muscle fatigue. Again, adjust intensity so as to hit fatigue in the 20 to 30 repetition range.
  4. Beginners quit here, but for a greater challenge, do another stint of cardio before calling it quits.
Repeat this program three or four times each week, extending the time on the treadmill (or whatever mode of cardio you chose) to 10 minutes or even 15 minutes. Combine with some weekly strength and flexibility training for the upper and lower body, as well as a sensible eating program, to achieve the overall best results.

Visit Us @ www.MumbaiHangOut.Org CRUNCH:
Lie on your back on a mat or padded carpet with your knees partially bent, feet flat on the floor and arms folded across your chest (as shown). Exhale as you press the lower back into the floor and begin to raise your head, shoulders and chest off the floor, concentrating on bringing the ribs towards the hips. Pause briefly as you feel your abdominal muscles tighten. The movement need only be a few inches. Inhale as you slowly curl back down, trying not to let your head touch the floor and maintaining tension in the abdominal muscles for the entire set. Repeat to muscle fatigue.

Intensity Booster: To increase intensity, lengthen the pause to two seconds or place your hands behind your head instead of across your chest.

BIKE KICK:
Lie on your back on a mat or padded carpet with the lower back pressed into the floor. Put your hands behind your head (but don't pull on the head). Bring your knees up to about a 45-degree angle and slowly go through the bicycle pedal motion. Touch your right elbow to your left knee and then left elbow to right knee. Continue to breathe naturally. Alternate opposite elbow to opposite knee in a slow and controlled manner until muscle fatigue.

Intensity Booster: Full extension of the legs will increase intensity (as shown), as will keeping the motion very slow and deliberate. Keep the knees partially bent throughout the movement to decrease intensity.

Home Remedies for BED BUGS

Bed Bugs

Youve probably read or heard about the horror stories associated with the small insects that feed on human blood in the night. They attack when you are sleeping and are quite adaptable in most of the environments catering to humans. This is the life of a bed bug and contrary to popular belief “ they surround themselves beyond unsanitary and unkempt conditions “ even striking the ritziest of five-star hotels. While professional extermination is almost always the only way to eliminate the problem, there are a few home remedies associated with the dreaded bed bug.

What are Bed Bugs?

Waiting until the night to attack their victims, the small nocturnal insect known as the bed bug belongs to the family Cimicidae, which is known to feed on blood. While humans are commonly referred to as the main sufferers of this pest, the bed bug also seeks out other warm-blooded hosts for their meals. With a past that traces back to ancient history, the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) has learned to successfully adapt to the same living spaces as humans [1].

With a preference to temperate climates, the bed bug is often found in warm temperatures, especially in locales such as Florida and the tropics of West Africa and South America. It is there that various species of the bed bug infest poultry, bats, humans, and other types of birds.

When the bed bug reaches maturity, it is reddish brown in color with a flattened, oval appearance. On their body, microscopic hairs give off a banded appearance. They possess no wings. Some people believe that bed bugs are so small that they cannot be seen by the naked eye. This is not the case, as some adults reach length of 4 to 5 millimeters (which translates into 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch). Their size is comparable to that of an apple seed. Since bed bugs are extremely shy and wary of others, an infestation of the insect is quite hard to pinpoint [2].

When feeding, the bed bug is typically active only at night with the most activity taking place an hour before dawn. Using two hollow tubes, the bed bug pierces the skin of their host and draws blood. One tube injects an anticoagulant into their victim, while the other tube is used for blood extraction. Average feeding times are about five minutes, where the bug then returns to their place of hiding. At the time of the bite, a victim is unaware, although late reactions come minutes to hours later.
In the home, the bed bug seeks many different places to hide during the day, including linens, drapery, headboards, desks, nightstands, artwork frames, mattresses, and clothing [3]. With the use of a flashlight, you may find a bed bug crawling about at night. Additional signs, such as blood spots help detect an infestation.

Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation [4]

The best way to detect a bed bug infestation is to call upon a professional, who will complete an inspection of your home. In case you wish to analyze your surroundings before hiring someone out of the Yellow Pages, some of the signs to seek out include:

a) Bug Bites:

Even though you may display bed bug bites on your body that occur during the night, this is not a sure sign that a bed bug was the culprit.

b) Blood:

The sight of dried blood (referred to as fecal spots) may appear on the box spring, behind the headboard, as well as about the seams of a mattress.

c) Bed Bug Skins:

A bed bug sheds skin during their nymphal stage, which looks like a hollowed-out bug.

d) Bed Bug Eggs:

About 1 millimeter in length, the eggs of the bed bug are rather difficult to pinpoint, but are still visible “ resembling the shape of rice.

Risk Factors

Bed bugs do not feed on dirt, debris, or crumbs, meaning an unclean environment is not the primary target for the insect to dwell. Bed bugs feed on blood and it is advantageous for them to seek out places where warm-blooded individuals are present. This is why places, such as hospitals, hotels, motels, inns, and cruise ships are perfect living quarters for a bed bug.

When bed bugs find their way into a home, there are plenty of different methods to their madness. When guests of a hotel settle in for the night, bed bugs may climb into their luggage, where they are then transported to a new environment. Bed bugs also travel by way of used furniture purchased at a garage sale or thrift shop. The same is true with used clothing, as bed bugs are known to hide in the crevices and folds of material.

In multi-unit dwellings, such as condominiums and apartment buildings, bed bugs find their way throughout the premises by moving about the walls, cracks, pipes, and wires. New residents may bring bed bugs into a living space through their moving boxes, mattresses, pillows, and other belongings.

Negative Effects of Bed Bugs

The pathogens found in the bodies of bed bugs have been connected to plague and hepatitis B, yet no conclusions have been made as to whether or not the insect is able to pass on disease to humans. While the threat of disease is of no consequence, the bed bug is seen as a rather unclean visitor that affects the sanitation of a household. One is embarrassed to admit they have bed bugs in their home. Additional negative outcomes associated with bed bugs include:

a) Infection:

Those who scratch their bed bug bites may develop skin infections, which may leave behinds scars.

b) Red, Itchy Welts:

The sight of a cluster of bed bug bites is quite alarming, especially when they claim large stretches of visible skin. The back, legs, and arms are common places that bed bugs attack.

c) Stress:

A bed bug infestation is rather stressful with the potential to cause delusional parasitosis or even post-traumatic stress disorder in extreme cases.

d) Poor Reaction to Saliva:

A handful of people may experience anaphylactic shock, as they suffer an allergic reaction to bed bug saliva.

e) Extermination Costs:

Since bed bugs are very difficult to remove from a home or hotel, professional means of extermination creates extra bills for a family or business.

f) Offensive Odor:

A strong scent comes with the presence of bed bugs, as they emit an oil-like liquid from their bodies.

Home Remedies for Bed Bugs

When it comes to bed bugs, there isnt much a homeowner can do to get rid of these pesky intrusions on their own. Before calling professional help, some have found slight success with the following home remedies for bed bugs:

a) Rubbing Alcohol:

While not a definite fix, spraying rubbing alcohol where bed bugs thrive may contain the problem by killing some on contact.

b) Fruit and Vegetable Insecticides:

Some insecticides comprised of pyrethrins and canola oil are sometimes used by those who wish to lay down a home remedy that is safe for children and pets.

c) Steam Treatments:

It is not uncommon to see some pest control companies use steam treatments to deal with mattresses and other pieces of upholstered furniture. While very limited effectiveness is associated with this type of remedy, it shows great promise in treating items with less than ½ inch of penetration. At home, one may use small steam cleaners to care for their mattresses and other bedding selections.

d) Dry Heat [5]:

Placing clothing, footwear, rugs, toys, stuffed animals, backpacks and other non-launderable items in the dryer for a certain length of time can conveniently remove bed bugs. When an average clothes dryer is run for five minutes at low, medium or high heat, they generate temperatures of about 140, 150 and 180 degrees (respectively). It is believed that when drying a bundle of infected clothes, high temperatures are able to kill bed bugs. It is suggested to run the dryer for more than 20 minutes.

e) Hot Sun:

Since temperatures over 113 degrees are said to kill bed bugs, it is suggested to wash and dry clothing and linens at high temperatures. When living in a hot desert climate, you may hang your bedding and clothes in the beaming sun to destroy lingering bed bugs.
